Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to a large brush fire Sunday morning and discovered a charred body.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue were called to the fire at 3161 N. Dixie Highway about 11 a.m. Drivers along North Dixie Highway reported the fire, according to the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue.

As firefighters were extinguishing the blaze, they discovered a body so badly burnt they were unable to confirm the gender. They also found numerous encampments in the wooded area. It is believed the body belongs to someone who had been living in the encampment, but that is not confirmed at this time.

The cause of the fire and subsequent death is being investigated by the City of Pompano Beach Fire Investigators, the State Fire Marshal, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
