As spring turns to summer, it's time to explore new hiking, biking and running trails in Berkeley and Oakland.

The exultant runs through the fire trails at sunset.

    The mud after the rain.

The long talks required by the trail. You'll be breathless, but that's okay.

The other run, in Temescal past the out of place abbey, gorgeous and serene, red brick against tall pine just off busy Claremont.

When I was abroad, I would remember my favorite place in the world with a sense of silence.

Have you ever read Jude the Obscure? The universe pleases the passing fancies of a few. But in terms of going back to the Bay, it was a funny thought. What if I never did?

But I did. And I advise you to try out a trail run. Joaquin Miller Park is another great choice. Or Tilden. Or the Berkeley fire trail, right behind the Claremont Hotel.

The Bayview Trail in Joaquin Miller is one of my favorites, and is great for dirt biking as well.

That one is steep, though. And it requires good grippy shoes so that if it’s muddy or too dry you can keep your footing.

Other treats to see while you’re in Berkeley and the East Bay in general:

The $0.99 produce section at Berkeley Bowl—don't miss it.

    Going to Gregoire.

Eating some ice cream just before the sun sets.

Going to see a play, when places that played plays were open.
