As of 8 pm on Friday, April 2, one kitesurfer of several was rescued in an after-dark water rescue led by firefighters at Windsurf Point in Foster City near San Francisco.

The incident was reported at 2403 E 3rd Ave at 7:23 pm.

The initial report was for a jet ski rescue.

Foster City Police Department advised, from a call they’d received, that there were possibly ten people in the water in distress.

When fire crews arrived at the scene seven minutes later, they did not see anyone in distress.

Two minutes later, they found one person in distress with a blue and red windsurf/kitesurf gear north of the San Mateo Bridge.

At 7:33 the water rescue launched and sought to make contact the blue windsurfer near the sandbar.

Additional engines were called to help when additional people were seen drifting in the water.

The Coast Guard was then notified.

One orange kite and one blue kite was then seen in distress north of the San Mateo Bridge.

It is unclear at this point what happened to the kitesurfers that were initially seen.

Twenty minutes from the first call, one person was rescued and at least five more people were reported in the water. A Helicopter was requested.

The rescued man was experiencing mild hypothermia.

Two more kitesurfers were drifting in the shipping channel drifting south, according to air support.

At last report, two people may have reached shore, but confirmation is requested. As of 9:09 pm, the last report was 43 minutes ago.
