Possible Tesla engulfed in flames on the side of the 101 freeway

On Easter Sunday, April 4, a little after 10 pm, a car engulfed in flames on the side of the 101 freeway near exit 14 was spotted and reported.

Witnesses report there was an explosion associated with the fire.

Video footage shows a car—possibly a Model 3 Tesla or BMW—completely ablaze as cars drive past it.

It is unknown if anyone was in the car before, during, or after the blaze.

Traffic appears to be slowing on the freeway.

Local residents living near the freeway can smell the blaze from their homes.

According to consumernotice.org, there are more than 170,000 highway vehicle fires in the United States every year. Most of these fires begin with problems in the engine, drivetrain or wheel areas, though they may also be caused by a faulty design or defective parts. Car fires account for 1 in every 8 calls that fire departments respond to.

It is possible that the car was a Tesla and caught fire despite being a non-gasoline-powered vehicle.

Electric vehicles use lithium ion batteries. Because of the way they are designed, they can catch fire or explode if they are damaged.

Vehicle fires seem quite common in Los Angeles, with local residents commenting that this area seems to be seeing many of these types of vehicle fires on freeways and the side of the road.
