Man shot multiple times in the Lower Bottoms as Oakland heads toward deadliest year

On Wednesday, April 28, near 8th and Campbell Street in the Lower Bottoms, police received multiple reports in the area regarding a suspect armed with a gun and another person who was shot.

The Incident

After the shooting, one of two suspects fled in a four-door silver Infinity with tinted windows and a tinted sunroof. It is missing a front license plate.

Police requested additional units to the scene. Officers discovered multiple rifle casings in the street.

Several vehicles nearby were also struck by bullets. Ten minutes after the initial report, EMS headed to the scene as police established a crime scene.

According to reports, the suspect stepped out of the passenger side of the vehicle and began shooting.

One of the suspects exited the vehicle and did not return to the vehicle before it fled. The suspect who did not enter the vehicle before it fled may still be in the area.

Local residents heard very loud gunfire, far more than the 14 shots originally reported.

A Deadly Year

In the past week, over 100 rounds of gunfire were fired in Oakland.

According to Wikipedia, rifles are used extensively in warfare, self defense, law enforcement, hunting, and shooting sports. This crime is not one of the intended uses for a rifle.

April 10 was the deadliest day of the year so far in Oakland, with three homicides. Forty-four homicides were reported in total as of earlier in April. This number has since increased. If it continues at this pace, Oakland will have its deadliest year on record.
