Subway robbed of $15 of food at gunpoint at Berkeley-Oakland border

Right around lunchtime on Friday, April 30, a Subway at 6343 Shattuck Ave was held up at gunpoint.

The suspect is white, 30-40 years old, around 5’9”, 200 lbs, last seen wearing a black hoodie, heading southbound on 63rd street and Shattuck Ave.

The suspect’s demands were simple. He wanted a sandwich.

Police add that a bag of chips and three cookies were also stolen in addition to a sandwich.

Hunger in Oakland

In 2019, Feeding America, one of the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States, did a national survey to assess hunger level across the U.S.

In the Bay Area as a whole, it was estimated that 800,000 people faced food insecurity out of approximately 7.15 million residents.

This was before the pandemic.

According to the East Bay Times, 12.2 percent of Alameda County’s population — or about 198,950 people — are in the predicament of not having enough food.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, food insecurity has almost doubled statewide since the pandemic began.

Responses to the Crime

While this crime ranges from funny to sad, some residents note that the suspect was able to afford, or somehow acquire, a firearm.

Others state that hunger is now widespread and this person was merely desperate.

Regardless of the circumstances around the crime and the suspect’s motives, this suspect has still not been apprehended.

Next time you go into Subway, be extra nice to the person behind the counter. Also the people at Peet’s on Lakeshore, who also experienced a robbery earlier this morning.
