  • Remnants of a Ghost Town and Cemetery High Above Boulder, Colorado

Caribou is a ghost town high in the Rocky Mountains above Boulder and Nederlands, Colorado. It is a great day trip from Boulder or Denver. There is little left there but a stone bunkhouse from it tungsten days, a log cabin, foundations, and a cemetery above the town. Come a long with us as we visit Caribou ghost town. edited description: 6/1/22

My great aunt and uncle lived there in the early 1900s. He owned a tungsten mine there, but sold it because he kept getting so much 'worthless yellow junk', later determined to be uranium. In the early 1980's, the cemetery was still easily accessible and in pretty good condition. I visited there several times and have pictures. My aunt told me that many women lost their minds there because of the relentless winds, and the loss of so many of their children to diphtheria, whooping cough and other diseases that would sweep the area. One could see many graves of entire families, members of whom died within days of each other. Many of the childrens' graves were enclosed within wooden or iron 'cribs'. It was very poignant.
