Philadelphia police are investigating the details of multiple illegal car meetups as one of their own officers was injured in the process of trying to disperse them.

Sources reported a total of 11 illegal car meetups, six of which allegedly involved excessive violence and destruction. Multiple videos can be seen across social media of cars doing ‘donuts’ with passengers hanging out the window near the City Hall section of Philadelphia. Some content even captures a vehicle losing control of the vehicle and striking a pedestrian in the crowd.

Police reported that officers were attacked by members of the illegal car meetups over the weekend. Deputy Commissioner Mike Cram told sources that this is not a new issue in Philadelphia and it has in fact, only gotten worse.

“Everything they do is disruptive, they’re ruining the quality of life,” said Deputy Commissioner Mike Cram with Philadelphia police. “At one point, they had a flame thrower. Yes, there’s video with a flame thrower.”

According to ABC news , the illegal car meetups began at approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday and lasted until 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police responded to multiple incidents, ranging from the 7400 block of Bustleton Avenue, to the 20th Street and Pattison Avenue,  Island and Bartram avenues, and at 15th and Market streets.

“They’re able to disperse quickly and then reform at other locations. That’s why we have officers dedicated. It’s playing wack-a-mole. We hit them at once, and they move to another,” Cram explained.

Police told sources that several officers were attacked, more than five police cars were damaged — including the mobile police station at 15th and Market streets — and roughly 200 vehicles were involved throughout the night.
