While there is nothing wrong with an occasional lil drinky drink, regular drinking in excess can take a toll on your mental and physical health. So if you’re looking for a reason to cutback, Sober October may be for you.

Sober October was originally founded in the U.K back in 2014 as a fundraising campaign for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Over the years, it has spread across the globe and similar to Dry January, people abstain from alcohol for the entire month.

    How is the beneficial?

Experts say that taking a break from drinking benefits your overall health, even if its temporarily. It’s also a great way to reset your body, both physically and mentally while giving you time to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol if needed.

“There are many improved health effects that happen as a result of giving up alcohol for a month,” according to
Ashley Loeb Blassingame, co-founder and Chief People Officer of Lionrock Recovery . “While some are person-specific, many are universal.”

Cutting out alcohol for 30 days can help improve your sleep quality and your memory. It can also reduce your risk for cancer and improve immune functions.

Some people may even experience weight loss and improved heart health.

Additionally, being sober for even a short period can help you break an addictive cycle and help you face emotions head on instead of using alcohol as a mask.

“Many people decide that abstinence is working for them and want to continue on and see what other benefits might come as a result of their experiment,” said Loeb Blassingame. “This leads some people to full-on sobriety and others to longer periods of sober exploration.

The value is in breaking the cycle and creating an extended experience of abstinence that demonstrates to the brain that the idea is viable. Additionally, it gives people enough time to reexamine their relationship with alcohol and attempt to have better boundaries around it when they choose to return.”

If you do choose to participate, use this month to explore the world of non-alcoholic beverages. From mocktails to alcohol-free beers, there are countless options that can satisfy your cravings without the hangover.

Also, this would be great time to pickup some new fresh hobbies such as cooking, painting or journaling.

Sober October is more than just a month of reduced alcohol consumption; it’s an opportunity to embrace a healthier lifestyle and by participating, you may learn a lot about yourself.

Document your journey, engage with others, and discover the rewards of a mindful approach to drinking!
