Browns: 3 Biggest Questions Heading Into The Regular Season

After a lackluster preseason performance against the Green Bay Packers, the Cleveland Browns hope to shore up a few things heading into Week 1.

The Browns will host the Dallas Cowboys on September 8. The contention between Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and receiver CeeDee Lamb has made headlines, but there could also be an issue in the Browns receiver room, as well.

Amari Cooper’s name popped up in trade rumors last week. Cooper was listed in reports as a possible target of the San Franciso 49ers, who could be looking to shop receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out. But for now, here are the three biggest questions the Cleveland Browns have heading into the regular season.

    1. When Will Nick Chubb Play?

The Browns have had two of the best running backs the NFL has ever seen, but after two knee surgeries that forced him to miss most of 2023, is it OK to think we’ll see Nick Chubb on the field anytime soon?

Chubb suffered the brutal injury in Week 2 at Pittsburgh last season. He needed two surgeries to repair his “medial capsule, meniscus, and medial collateral ligament, as well as his anterior cruciate ligament”.

According to an August 3 report on Sports Illustrated , “the Browns are hoping to get Chubb back at some point early on during the season”.

But as far as an actual date no that return? Nobody knows.

Hopefully, we’ll get an update soon about one of Cleveland’s most important players over the last 25 years.

    2. What Will Deshaun Watson Play Like?

It’s no secret that Deshaun Watson hasn’t lived up to his unprecedented $230 million fully guaranteed contract. While he has shown flashes of greatness, including his comeback win against the Ravens in his final game last season, it just flatly hasn’t been enough.

Outside of his oft-mediocre play on the field, Watson has been as injured as anyone in the league over the last two seasons. He’s played in just 12 of a possible 34 games. His 14 touchdowns to 9 interceptions are just decent, and he’s been sacked 37 times – a problem he sometimes brings on himself by attempting to scramble instead of just getting rid of the ball.

Will Deshaun Watson put together a healthy campaign and allow Cleveland to get into the playoffs with their QB1?

    We’ll see.

    3. Will The Defense Regress, Improve, Or Stay The Same?

There’s a whole lot of good we can say when it comes to the Browns’ defense a year ago.

There are a few not-so-good things that can be said as well.

The Browns were No. 1 in total defense, giving up just 270.2 yards per game. They were also No. 1 in passing yards allowed, giving up just over 165 yards per game.

But the Browns red zone defense in 2023 was dead last. And in a road playoff game in Houston, the Browns were carved up by CJ Stroud to the tune of 274 yards, 3 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Granted, injuries played a major role. But will the Browns be able to carry a strong defensive force all the way through the 2024 campaign?
