Maine Casting Calls: Your Ticket to Stardom
The glitz and glam of Hollywood captures the attention of Americans starting from an early age. Beyond celebrities' Instagram Stories and red carpet poses, there are actors out there paying their dues and honing their craft in pursuit of a sustainable career or a fulfilling sideline. Submitting to casting calls is a big part of that journey.
Was the Snakmaster the Best Kitchen Invention of All Time?
While I'd love to argue that the '80s and '90s were the golden age of TV sitcoms, it would be a disservice not to acknowledge that it was also the era when "As Seen on TV" infomercials truly revolutionized every aspect of our lives in every room of the house. Fixing things in the garage! Cleaning the bathroom! And perhaps most of all—mastering every task in the kitchen.

Who Will Be the Next Country Artist to Play Golf in Orrington?
Darius Rucker went golfing last week on the same course where one of Country's greatest performers played a few years ago. This is one of those cool celebrity sightings we hear about in the days after it happened that makes us say 'Where was I?!' Darius Rucker, aka Hootie of Hootie and the Blowfish, came to Orrington last week to play 18 holes of golf. He made a good choice when he stopped by Rocky Knoll Country Club on Route 15 because it has beautiful greens and a very friendly staff. Darius paused to take pictures with some of the folks there and I've heard nothing but wonderful things about what a nice guy he is.
Maine Wants You to Design the New State Flag, but There’s a Catch
This whole flag debate has been going on way too long. Let's be real... Haven't we all had just about enough of this? I won't lie, I think our current flag isn't that spectacular, but a pine tree and a star doesn't exactly add a "wow" factor either. But, it's been center-stage here in Maine for a hot minute as residents have haggled about our new flag for a few years.
If You’re Ever Caught In A “Moose Standoff”, Better Let It Lead, Experts Say
June is one of the peak months for moose collisions in Maine. Statistics say the top 3 counties in the state for moose crashes are Aroostook, Penobscot, and Franklin counties, with Somerset and Oxford counties right behind that. State Wildlife safety experts say that if you do find yourself face-to-face...
Reviewing Hiking Trails of Maine: Jordan Pond & South Bubble
I'll always begin every hiking trail review with the time, date and the weather on that date, as they can have a significant impact on any experience. My 16-year-old dog and I hiked the Jordan Pond Path in Acadia National Park and up the 500-foot ascension to Bubble Rock on Sunday, June 16th, 2024, beginning at 5pm and ending around 7pm. It was mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 60s. The hike is an easy 3.1 loop along the shoreline of Jordan Pond, and an additional challenging half-mile hike if you choose to incorporate the Bubble Rock path. Here was our experience.
Is Maine Now Home to One of the Most Invasive Fishes in the US?
There are invasive fish signs posted on the road near my camp. A couple years ago, I noticed some signs along the camp road, indicating that if you were to catch a Northern Pike in our lake, that you needed to kill it immediately and, under no circumstances, throw it back. You were specifically asked to kill it if you caught it. Seems harsh, but Northern Pike can decimate a small lake.

Raise That Banner: The Boston Celtics Are NBA Champions
The Boston Celtics just completed one of the most dominant seasons in NBA history. After finishing the regular season with the best record in the league, the Celtics completely steamrolled the playoff competition to win an NBA record 18th championship. That's not too bad for a team that many experts believed wasn't built to win it all.

Why Has Dry Dock Restaurant in Portland’s Old Port Been Empty for Years in Maine?

Of Maine’s 4 Types of Hummingbirds, You’ll Only See This One.
I'm kind of obsessed with hummingbirds. I'm not really sure that's a secret at this point. I talk constantly of my love for the little feathered friends, and count the days until I can put the feeder back up. I like to put one out front and one out back. I tried doubling up, but then one particular hoard-y male tried to dominate both feeders. I think it was tiring him out, so I moved the second one out front.

In Maine, Why are Some Leaves Changing Now, if it’s not Summer?
While summer hasn't really started, I'm not ready for fall yet. To be fair, "summer" never really got off the ground at all last year. It was just kind of a damp, rainy, and foggy period that lasted the whole time. We had a glimpse of good weather here and there, but it's no surprise that Mother Nature had no idea what she was doing last year.
