NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Three Florida residents were charged on Tuesday in connection with a brutal acid attack on a New Jersey woman, allegedly planned by the victim’s ex-boyfriend, who hired the other two to carry out the assault, according to prosecutors.

The attack happened on July 26, when the 42-year-old woman was returning home from work and parked in her driveway in the Forest Hills development of Monroe Township. As she exited her vehicle, one of the attackers threw a cup of acid at her, causing severe burn injuries, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.

When Monroe Township Police arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from extensive chemical burns. She was immediately airlifted to a burn center, where she continues to receive treatment for burns covering 35% of her body. Authorities believe the liquid used in the attack was a highly caustic acid.

An intensive investigation by detectives from the Monroe Township Police Department and the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office led to the identification of the suspect vehicle, which had been rented from an agency in Florida.

Investigators determined that 38-year-old Betty Jo Lane and 39-year-old Jmar McNeil, both from Jacksonville, Florida, were recruited and paid by the victim’s ex-boyfriend, 49-year-old William DiBernardino, of Boynton Beach, Florida, to carry out the attack.

Lane and McNeil allegedly traveled from Florida to New Jersey in a rented car specifically to target the victim.

Following the investigation, authorities traveled to Florida to continue their work, with assistance from the Boynton Beach Police Department, Jacksonville Sheriff's Department, Fort Pierce Police Department, and the United States Marshal's Service.

Lane, McNeil, and DiBernardino were arrested in Florida and are now facing several charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and stalking.

The defendants are currently in custody in Florida and are awaiting extradition to New Jersey to face these charges.
