NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man walking his dog was hit and killed by a minivan while trying to cross the street in New Jersey on Wednesday, according to police.

The accident happened at around 4 p.m. when Charles Cavallo, 72, was driving his 2002 Chrysler Town & Country minivan westbound on Hamilton Avenue near the intersection with Donald Drive in Trenton.

At the same time, 63-year-old Mohamed Ahmed was walking his dog on the same street and attempted to cross, according to Hamilton police.

A preliminary investigation found that Ahmed was in the westbound lane when Cavallo's minivan struck him, police said.

Ahmed was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The dog was not injured in the crash, authorities said.

Based on the initial investigation and evidence from the scene, police said that traffic on Hamilton Avenue had the green light at the intersection with Donald Drive. The nearby crosswalk was not used by the pedestrian, and the speed of the minivan did not appear to be a contributing factor.

The crash is being investigated by Officer C. Clugsten of the Hamilton Police Traffic Unit.

Any witnesses are asked to contact the Hamilton Police Traffic Unit at (609) 581-4000.
