NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A man who was detained in a holding cell at an NYPD station in the Bronx on Saturday died of an apparent drug overdose, police said.

The 44-year-old man fell unconscious and unresponsive in his cell at Transit District 11 headquarters, located next to Yankee Stadium in Concourse, early Saturday morning.

He was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln where doctors pronounced him dead of a drug overdose, police said. The medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.

Police arrested the man when they found him smoking at the 149th Street–Grand Concourse station, authorities said.

They patted him down and discovered he had a stash of drugs on him. The exact substance in his possession was not immediately disclosed.

He was charged with drug possession and violating local law, police said.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending proper family notification.
