NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 46-year-old man cycling in Brooklyn was killed on Sunday morning when he was struck by a van, police said.

It happened just before 11:30 a.m. at Union Avenue and Lynch Street in Williamsburg.

The cyclist and van were both traveling northbound on Union Avenue when the van hit the 46-year-old. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said.

After striking the cyclist, officials said that the van crashed into an unoccupied sedan. The 40-year-old motorist was transported by EMS to an area hospital in stable condition.

New York City Councilmember Lincoln Restler, who represents Williamsburg, acknowledged the death on social media and vowed to advocate for safer streets.

“We suffered tragic cyclist fatality by Union & Lynch in Williamsburg today,” he wrote. “We’ll keep pushing for safer streets on every block. More cyclists died in NYC last year than 25 yrs. These deaths are preventable w/ network of protected lanes.”

Thirty cyclists were killed in 2023, making it the deadliest year for cyclists since 1999, according to the Department of Transportation. Nearly 400 cyclists were severely injured.

    The investigation is ongoing.
