LAS VEGAS (1010 WINS) – The world’s reigning hot-dog eating champ Joey "Jaws" Chestnut beat longtime rival Takeru Kobayashi during a livestreamed Labor Day face-off on Netflix after missing this year's Coney Island eating contest.

Chestnut ate a record-breaking 83 hot dogs —besting his previous record of 76 hot dogs—to defeat Kobayashi, who ate 66 hot dogs, onstage at a Las Vegas arena.

Chestnut, 40, not only claimed a $100,000 prize but bragging rights in the over-decade-old beef between the two competitive eaters, who last faced off at the 2009 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, two years after Chestnut claimed the Nathan’s title from Kobayashi in 2007.

Their Labor Day showdown at the Hyper X Arena—dubbed “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef”—came just two months after organizers announced Chestnut would not compete in the July 4 contest in Coney Island, where he’d dominated the competition for more than a decade.

After Chestnut signed a deal with Impossible Foods, which makes plant-based hot dogs, Major League Eating said the deal was an “exclusivity” issue but that it was Chestnut's decision to step back from the competition he’d participated in since 2005. Chestnut disputed he made the choice, saying Nathan’s and Major League Eating made the decision to “ban” him.

Chestnut, who had called Kobayashi his “fiercest rival” before Monday’s eating bout, credited his longtime competitor with helping him beat his own world record.

"I was trying to get 80 hot dogs for years, and without Kobayashi, I was never able to do it," Chestnut said.

“He drives me,” the champ said. “We weren’t always nice to each other, but we push each other to be our best.”

Kobayashi, who announced his retirement from competitive eating earlier this year, said, “I feel like I did everything I could.”
