NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Long Island man was sentenced to prison on Thursday for stabbing his girlfriend in the neck with scissors last year, prosecutors said.

Jorge Guevara, 49, of Bay Shore, was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by five years of post-released supervision after a jury found him guilty of attempted assault and other charges, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced.

"This case represents a horrific act of domestic violence that will leave lasting scars on all involved," Tierney said. "We cannot begin to fathom the terror those children experienced, or the betrayal and pain the victim suffered at the hands of someone who should have been her protector."

According to court documents, on March 28, 2023, Guevara threatened his then-girlfriend with a knife during an argument after she returned home from work.

After the victim struggled with Guevara over the knife, he then grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed her in the neck and shoulder repeatedly while three children watched, prosecutors said.

After stabbing the victim, Guevara prevented both the victim and the children from calling 911. However, a good Samaritan neighbor heard their screams for help and rushed into the house to assist.

Once inside, Guevara prevented the neighbor from calling the police and blocked the door when she tried to leave. She ultimately jumped out of a bedroom window to reach a phone and call the police.

The victim was transported to South Shore University Hospital where she suffered a deep laceration to her neck and underwent emergency surgery.

On June 19, Guevara was convicted after a jury trial on charges of attempted assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and menacing.
