    Man, 55, killed in crash with construction vehicle on RFK Bridge

    NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man was killed during a crash with a construction vehicle on the on Robert F. Kennedy Bridge early Thursday morning, authorities said.

    Just before 4 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision on the Manhattan bound side of the RFK Bridge.

    An investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined that 55-year-old Mario Lopez male was driving a 2014 Chrysler sedan, traveling northbound on the RFK Bridge when he collided with the rear of a 2024 Caterpillar Power Shovel construction vehicle that was driven by a 35-year-old man.

    The Chrysler spun out of control and struck the retaining wall which separates the northbound and southbound lanes on the RFK Bridge, officials said.

    EMS transported Lopez to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was pronounced dead.

    The 35-year-old man sustained minor injuries and was transported by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst in stable condition.

    There have been no arrests made and the investigation remains ongoing.

    The article sounds like what killed him was hitting the wall and not the initial crash with the caterpillar, so the question is how fast was he traveling and was he wearing a seatbelt in order to come out so gravely injured and die from the impact of hitting the wall.
