FAIRFIELD, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Police arrested a man on Wednesday and charged him in a double shooting that killed one hotel worker and critically injured another at a Ramada Inn in New Jersey last week, prosecutors said.

Tyrone Malcolm, 39, was arrested at a residence in Middletown, New York, on Wednesday and charged with murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in relation to the Oct. 4 shooting.

An investigation by detectives from the Essex Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Fairfield Police Department identified Malcolm, of Middletown, as the suspect.

He is accused of fatally shooting Mohammed Sahariar, 28, who lived in Fairfield and worked at the hotel, and critically wounding another employee.

Sahariar and the second victim were working at the Ramada Inn, located on Two Bridges Road, when they were shot at about 12:27 p.m.

They were transported to an area hospital where an hour later Sahariar was pronounced dead. His colleague remains at the hospital in critical condition.

“The members of the Homicide Task Force worked non-stop to identify and expeditiously apprehend the offender,” Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said. He also offered thanks to the Fairfield Police Department, New Jersey State Police and U.S. Marshal’s Office for their assistance.

On Wednesday, Malcolm was being held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
