NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – NYPD Interim Commissioner Tom Donlon is preparing to step down in the coming days, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed on Thursday.

Donlon, appointed just last month by Adams after the resignation of former Commissioner Edward Caban, has reportedly begun packing his belongings at NYPD headquarters, according to POLITICO who first reported the possible resignation.

In an exclusive interview with NBC's Telemundo 47, Adams confirmed that Donlon will soon be stepping down, with a permanent police commissioner set to take his place. "We are finalizing that process," Adams said.

Donlon has also cleared his meetings for the coming days, signaling his potential exit, according to reports.

NYPD personnel assigned by Donlon are being reassigned to their original duties, sources told 1010 WINS.

However, ahead of the Telemundo interview's release, a City Hall spokesperson tells 1010 WINS, "Interim Commissioner Donlon will remain commissioner until the mayor makes a decision on the permanent commissioner."

Donlon came into the role with experience in the FBI and counterterrorism, but just a week into the job, he was subjected to federal scrutiny over documents that he had said not in any way related to the NYPD.

Former commissioner Caban stepped down on Sept. 12, shortly after federal investigators seized his phone and his brother James Caban’s phone in connection with a federal probe into allegations of a protection racket involving the Cabans. Donlon’s appointment came swiftly after Caban’s departure, but it wasn’t long before federal agents reportedly searched Donlon’s home as part of the ongoing investigation.
