NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A New Jersey man was arrested on Thursday for impersonating a federal agent and convincing a woman to place $32,000 in a box, which he then stole, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

The 65-year-old victim received a call from someone claiming to be from Amazon regarding her iPad on Wednesday. She was then directed to a fake agent at the Federal Trade Commission to report fraud. After speaking with the fraudulent FTC agent, the victim was falsely informed that she had open warrants and was instructed to meet a federal agent at the corner of Power House Road and Roslyn Road.

She was told to place $32,000 in a box and deposit it in the agent’s car upon his arrival. The victim followed these instructions but realized the next morning that she may have been scammed. She went to a police station to report the incident.

While at the precinct, the victim was contacted again and directed to meet at the same location with an additional $40,000.

Before this second exchange took place, detectives arrested Malkit Singh, 35, without incident. The victim identified Singh as the man who had met her the previous day.

Singh is charged with grand larceny and attempted grand larceny.

Detectives request anyone who feels they were a victim of a similar incident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911.
