NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Long Island man was sentenced to prison on Wednesday after pleading guilty to killing his son-in-law in the driveway of their Islip Terrace home in 2022, according to prosecutors.

Eduardo Vega, 58, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty in September to manslaughter for fatally stabbing Roshane McLaren, 34, in his driveway, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said.

Vega’s wife and co-defendant, Tanya Denis, 48, also pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution for aiding Vega after the killing.

“There is absolutely no justification for this defendant’s violent actions,” Tierney said. “The brutal manner in which he chose to attack and kill Mr. McLaren deserves an equally serious prison sentence.”

According to court documents, on Sept. 27, 2022, Vega and Denis lived together with Denis’ two daughters, their husbands, and children. On the morning of that day, Vega got into an argument with one of the daughters' husbands in the backyard.

The altercation escalated when Vega threw a lawn chair at him and threatened to hit him with a baseball bat. When the daughters tried to intervene, Vega punched one of them in the face. The victim eventually deescalated the situation, and Vega then left the home. While Vega was gone, McLaren learned that Vega had struck his wife during the fight.

A short time later, Vega returned to the home with Denis. In the driveway, McLaren confronted Vega for hitting his wife. Vega then stabbed the victim in the chest twice, piercing his left lung, heart, diaphragm, and stomach.

Vega fled the scene. Minutes later, Denis left the home in her car and found Vega. She then gave Vega money and drove him to the Brentwood train station and he fled to Brooklyn.

McLaren was transported to South Shore University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Vega eventually turned himself in on Oct. 2, 2022.

On Sept. 13, he pleaded guilty and on Wednesday he was sentenced to 25 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
