Liza Colón-Zayas made history on Sunday as the first Latina to win an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on The Bear. And in true humble fashion, she didn’t even have a speech prepared.

“I didn’t think it would be possible,” she said, explaining why she didn’t follow her husband, David Zayas’s, advice to jot down some notes ahead of time. As the competition in her category was Meryl Streep, Carol Burnett, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, and Hannah Einbinder, her lack of confidence in a win was understandable.

.At the Emmy Performer Nominee Celebration, she told The Hollywood Reporter that if she did make history she would be proud to do so.

“It’s epic,” she started. “The women who are in the same category with me, I love and admire them so much so either way I win to be considered their peers. And then if it happens, it’s epic for women and people who look like me. I’ve done something.”

When the moment came, Colón-Zayas rose to the occasion by paying homage to her fellow nominees.

“I love you all,” she said. “I revere you to the bottom of my heart.”

Colón-Zayas, 52, is a Bronx native with Puerto Rican roots. Despite a lengthy career, mostly in TV, but also as the star of an acclaimed one-woman show, Sistah Supreme, back in 2000, this was her first Emmy nomination.

She won for her role as Tina Marrero, the tough but lovable line cook in the critically acclaimed FX series that racked up 23 nominations this year. She became one of its record 11 total winners this year as The Bear earned wins for Best Comedy,  Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress along with writing, directing and casting awards.

The actress thanked her family, including her mother and grandchildren, and expressed gratitude to the creators of The Bear for giving her career “new life” with the show. She also had a special message for the Latino community.

“To all the Latinas who are looking at me — keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights,” she said in her acceptance speech.

Colón-Zayas told Variety earlier that just getting nominated for her first-ever Emmy was a huge milestone, saying it let her know that she’d “run a good race.” But now, she’s gone beyond that —making Emmy history.
