New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing significant legal trouble after being charged with bribery, fraud, and soliciting political contributions from a foreign national. These allegations surfaced in an indictment unsealed on Thursday, following an extensive investigation.

Federal agents arrived at Adams’ official residence, Gracie Mansion, on the morning of the indictment. In a press conference, Adams maintained his innocence, stating that his legal team would carefully review the charges. He expressed confidence in his compliance with campaign laws, asserting, “If it’s campaign violations, I know I don’t violate the campaign [laws]. If it’s foreign donors, I know I don’t take money from foreign donors.” However, he faced chants of “Resign!” from a gathering crowd.

The indictment alleges that over nearly a decade in politics, Adams accepted improper benefits, including lavish travel from wealthy foreign businesspeople and a Turkish government official seeking influence. It claims that these foreign donors used U.S.-based straw donors to bypass federal laws, enabling Adams to exploit New York City’s public matching funds system, which reportedly secured over $10 million for his 2021 mayoral campaign.

Details in the indictment allege that a senior Turkish diplomat arranged free or discounted flights for Adams and his associates on Turkey’s national airline, with trips to countries like France, China, and Turkey. In return for these perks, the indictment states that Adams pressured the New York City Fire Department to expedite the opening of Turkey’s new consulate, even without passing a fire inspection.

Adams faces five criminal counts, with wire fraud carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The charge of soliciting and accepting a bribe could lead to 10 years, while conspiracy and soliciting campaign contributions from foreign nationals could result in five years each. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Dale E. Ho.
