For years, rumors have swirled about Russell Simmons moving to Bali to avoid legal trouble, but his situation is far from funny. Recently, Simmons was served with a lawsuit while in Bali, and the circumstances were anything but expected.

According to AllHipHop , process server Daniel John Ayoub traveled to the Gdas Bali Health and Wellness Resort on March 5, navigating security and searching for Simmons for about an hour. Once he found the music mogul, Ayoub handed him a defamation lawsuit filed by former music executive Drew Dixon. The lawsuit is tied to Simmons’ alleged failure to address Dixon’s sexual assault claims.
“I recognized him right away as Russell Simmons,” Ayoub said. “[He’s] well-known in Bali and, of course, in the U.S.” Simmons, who was in a meeting at the time, was reportedly stunned to be found and served legal papers while in Indonesia.

Simmons has faced sexual assault allegations for years. Back in 2017, actor Terry Crews accused him of defending WME agent Adam Venit, who allegedly assaulted Crews. Screenshots of a message from Simmons surfaced, showing him asking Crews to give Venit a “pass.”
In December 2023, Simmons finally broke his silence on the sexual assault claims during an appearance on In Depth with Graham Bensinger . He stated that he had taken nine lie detector tests to prove his innocence. “Seven were conducted by the Chairman of the Polygraph Association,” Simmons said. “I wanted to clear my name for every serious accusation.”

Despite his efforts, Simmons’ past remains a topic of controversy. The Los Angeles Times reported that Simmons and director Brett Ratner were both accused of working together to assault women, including one who was 17 years old at the time.
Drew Dixon, who filed the defamation lawsuit, claims Simmons raped her in 1995 and later tried to ruin her reputation. Simmons has denied the allegations, accusing Dixon of seeking fame with her accusations.

Dixon has also accused music executive L.A. Reid of sexual harassment, and their legal teams are reportedly in settlement talks.
Simmons, meanwhile, remains adamant about the results of his polygraph tests, despite some skepticism about their reliability. “Some say they’re not always accurate, but they’re about 94% accurate,” he said. “I did nine, and I’m confident I don’t believe any of the accusations.”
