With the start of the NFL season just one week away, the hype and anticipation are reaching their apex.

For Colts fans, the hype and anticipation is offset by a fair amount of uncertainty and nervousness over their quarterback, Anthony Richardson. The questions about his health and his progress have been asked time and time again since he injured his shoulder in 2023; soon, we’ll finally begin to have answers.

During the Thursday edition of The Ride With JMV, former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky joined the show and gave his thoughts on the Colts young quarterback as he prepares for his sophomore campaign.

“I think number one, he’s a remarkable talent, both physically and football intelligence. So you take this unbelievably, uniquely talented person, and last year in the moments that he played, you saw those flashes in those first three or four games. Now the reality is, Anthony has got to play, he’s got to get reps. He was obviously a young man that started a short period of time at Florida, and then gets hurt in his rookie season, so the worst case scenario is that you fall into that Trey Lance-type of experience where, you are this really physically gifted player, but you don’t play enough snaps in a pivotal time period which is kind of like your 18-25-year-old stretch as a a quarterback because you develop so much in your understanding of the game, so Anthony has got to get playing consistently here.”

Despite the questions, Dan seemed optimistic about Richardson in his second year, and head coach Shane Steichen was a big reason why.

“The benefit of being physically gifted in a quarterback-run offense is this: if they are going to marry a lot of the things that they did in 2022 in Philidelphia with Jalen Hurts, the overwhelming thing that I would use to describe the pass game that year was ‘simple’. I’m not talking about intellectually dumb, it was so simple because they had physically dominant wide receivers, mainly A.J Brown, and they saw simplified defenses because the defense was always consumed with the quarterback run. So physically gifted dude, he obviously needs to get reps so there is an understanding that has to happen, but when married with the makeup the team, and hindering or minimizing some of the lack of talent or experience because of the quarterback run, I’m very high on it.”
