Global warming denotes the sustained elevation of the planet's overall temperature over an extended period. Although this warming tendency has persisted for some time, its acceleration in the past century owes greatly to the heightened consumption of fossil fuels. As the global populace has burgeoned, so has the utilization of fossil fuels—comprising coal, oil, and natural gas—which induces what's termed the "greenhouse effect" within Earth's atmosphere.

The greenhouse effect unfolds as sunlight penetrates the atmosphere, yet the resultant heat, when reflected off the surface, struggles to escape back into space. Emissions from burning fossil fuels act as a barrier, impeding the dissipation of this heat from the atmosphere. These emissions include carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, water vapor, methane, and nitrous oxide. The surplus heat trapped in the atmosphere has led to a steady rise in the global average temperature, commonly recognized as global warming.
