Recount of Tulsa mayoral race could cost taxpayers $12k per day

Brent VanNorman’s campaign requested a recount of Tuesday's mayoral election.

VanNorman's campaign sent a press release:

Given the incredibly narrow margin and the high stakes for Tulsa’s future, we believe a recount is justified and necessary. This decision isn’t about challenging the process but about reinforcing confidence in it. We trust in the process, and we want to verify the results to ensure full confidence in this election.

The Tulsa County Election Board did get the petition for the manual recount on Aug. 30th.

VanNorman paid $12,600 for the recount. Candidates pay $600 per every 3,000 votes counted manually. Taxpayers pay for the staffing to do the recount.

In this case about 40-60 people for the count and it could take several days— that means it could cost taxpayers $12,000 per day.

The next step is a court date on Sept. 5th where a judge will rule the recount will proceed.

VanNorman came in third with 18,019 votes and 31.84% of the vote in Tuesday's election.

According to the Oklahoma State Election Board, Monroe Nichols received 18,729 votes, or 33.10% of the vote, while Karen Keith received 18,457 votes, or 32.62% of the vote.
