Toddler hit, killed by car leads to shooting in north Tulsa

Tulsa police are investigating both a deadly accident that killed a three-year-old, and the aftermath that saw shots fired in north Tulsa on Oct. 22.

It happened around 8:45 pm near 36th Street North and Garrison, inside the Bradford Apartments complex. Initially, the driver left the scene but told police he only left because people in the apartment complex assaulted him and fired shots in his direction.

Investigators haven't said if any supervising adults were also outside at the time of the collision. Security camera footage reportedly showed the child run into the street and hit by a passing car going abut 25 miles per hour, according to TPD.

"That child was dragged 5-10 feet. A large crowd gathered after the auto-pedestrian collision," Capt. Matt Arnold said Tuesday night. "The driver of the vehicle exited the vehicle. He was very distraught."

The child later died from his injuries, police said.

"This is a horrible accident," Tulsa Police Department's Officer Danny Bean told 2 News Wednesday. "It's the worst thing you can imagine probably as a parent or family involved in this – a young child, you know, getting hit by a car then dying from his injuries. That's the thing here, is a horrible accident. There's nothing to suggest anyone has done anything wrong."
What happened afterwards has now caused a separate investigation. Two shots reportedly hit the car. The driver was not hit. He later returned to the scene after police arrived

"Those shots were being fired as he was leaving because he thought he was being threatened," Ofc. Bean said. "That's a part of this investigation, but trying to find out who those people are for a different crime will be down the road."

Amanda Henderson's family lives in the complex, and saw the immediate aftermath from a couple blocks away.

"It just scares me as a mom, you know?" she said. "I have five children. I have two younger children that I let play outside. But I keep my eye on them at all times."

Once Tulsa police finishes investigating both the child killed and the possible assault and shots fired at the driver, the county district attorney's office will also review potential charges.
