When a baby experiences trouble sleeping , it’s no fun for either the baby or mom. Babies typically start sleeping through the night at about 3 months old or when they weigh about 12 to 13 pounds. When your super sleeper infant suddenly starts having sleep troubles after weeks or months of sleeping well, you might feel overwhelmed.

It’s important for new moms not to worry. This is normal. About 30 percent of infants have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep.

“Dealing with your baby’s sleep regression can be so challenging,” said Cierra Murphy Higgs , a perinatal maternal health advocate. “You are likely beyond exhausted and at your wit’s end, but remember to take care of yourself too.”

A full night’s rest for an infant is defined as six to eight consecutive hours. However, between four to six months, some babies experience sleep regressions. Here are signs to look for that your baby is facing sleep regression and tips on what you can do to help.

What Causes a Change in Sleep Patterns?

A sleep regression is not just a bad night’s sleep. It’s when your little sleeper continually wakes up, is fussy and cries throughout the night. Sleep regressions typically last anywhere from two to six weeks.

“It’s not uncommon for babies who’ve been great sleepers to hit a bump in the road,” Higgs said. “A few things can shake things up.”

Higgs explained that a number of things can throw your baby’s sleep cycle off. Some examples include growth spurts, teething, illness, developmental milestones, like crawling or separation anxiety, or changes in routine or environment. Sleep regressions are also commonly connected to big developmental changes in baby’s motor skills and brain development, including understanding object permanence, and learning how to sit up, crawl and stand.

Another common change that babies experience at the 10 to 12 week marker is the development of the baby’s circadian rhythm. As time passes and your baby’s body adjusts from lighter to deeper sleep cycles, they might be more likely to wake up.

    When Changes Likely Will Occur

Sleep regressions can pop up at various stages. Most often, sleep regressions occur around four months, eight to 10 months, and around 18 months. It’s like their sleep habits hit a speed bump due to developmental changes or teething.

“Every baby’s different,” Higgins said. “Some breeze through these phases, while others may need a bit more time and patience.”

How to Prepare for and Manage Disruptions

It’s important to understand that sleep regressions are a natural part of a child’s development. Don’t get discouraged if your baby seems to have hit a bump in their sleep patterns.

“I understand how challenging it can be for parents, especially when you’ve just established a routine that suddenly gets completely upended during these regression periods,” Higgins said.  “It is important to have patience during these temporary setbacks.”

To prepare for sleep regressions, try to establish good sleep habits early on. This means putting your baby in their crib when they show signs of drowsiness. Practicing this habit will teach your baby to fall asleep independently without rocking, soothing or nursing. Practice is key, but know that this is an imperfect journey and it can feel discouraging or overwhelming at times.

“Establishing healthy sleep habits beforehand can help lessen the impact of regressions,” Higgins said.

When your baby does experience sleep regressions, consistency and patience are key to managing. Repeating the same steps, in the same order signals to your baby that it’s time for bed. Stick to a soothing bedtime routine, offer comfort during nighttime wake-ups and ensure a calm environment.

Moms should also anticipate potential disruptions. Stay flexible with routines while ensuring a soothing bedtime environment. Parents should seek professional help if needed.

“Don’t hesitate to reach out for support if you need it,” she added.
