But there are plenty of islands in parts of the world that simply offer a remote lifestyle in a four-season climate. Regardless, setting up a life on an island needn’t be pricey. In fact, there are some islands and peninsulas in the United States that offer incredibly affordable housing. We found an island that has housing available for less than $94,000, in fact.
To determine the most affordable islands (and a few peninsulas) to live on, 247Tempo.com reviewed five-year data on median household value and median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey . Island cities, towns, and Census-designated places were ranked based on the ratio of median home value to median household income. Island status was determined using Census TIGER/Line place boundary definitions for 2022 and shapefile data from the Global Island Explorer database developed by the U.S. Geological Survey in partnership with Esri.
