Many young people raised by Boomer parents are quickly realizing that items designed to be “collectible” are rarely so. Most of these items, such as Beanie Babies or Precious Memories, were common, mass-produced, and easy to get. Thus, these items did not typically retain their value and very few are worth money. Even those “worth something” are typically only worth a bit more than the MSRP, certainly not thousands. However, some Boomer-era collectibles can net you a pretty penny. Let’s examine those categories.
To populate this list, we first looked at various auction websites that focused on estate sales to see what their blogs recommended for sales. As more Boomers are reaching old age and their estates are being passed to their children, auction houses are getting a better handle on what Boomer-era items are worth money. Then, within those categories of items, we looked for the best sales on single items to determine how much some of these collectibles could be worth.

Boomer-era comic books can be rare enough to be worth real money. In that era, comic books were not as ubiquitous a hobby as they are today. Print runs for comic books at the time could run in total quantities of 50,000 copies or less throughout the entire United States. Thus, copies of these books are actually quite rare because not many of them were printed in the first place. Many older comic books are very valuable because they are truly rare and not many people owned them in the first place. Some sell for thousands or even millions of dollars. On April 4, 2004, Action Comics #1 Kansas City Pedigree (DC, 1938) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages sold for $6,000,000, the highest price ever paid for a single comic book.
14. Old Trading Cards
While trading card games like the Pokémon TCG and Magic: The Gathering might seem like nerd-only hobbies, it’s important to remember that nerds rule the world! Not only do nerds often have well-paying jobs, but they’re also very willing to drop fat stacks of cash on specialty items for their hobbies. Like comic books, trading cards have become less rare and more common in the mainstream. So, newer cards often aren’t worth as much and get reprinted more frequently, further reducing the price of entry. However, some rare old trading cards can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The 1998 Holofoil Illustrator Pikachu Pokémon TCG card, of which only an estimated 20–39 copies were distributed, sold for a whopping sum of $672,000 in an auction ! It is worth noting that while maybe not in the hundred-thousand range, many newer trading cards are printed in limited runs which make them more valuable than standard reprints. People looking to play the game should invest in low-cost reprints, but collectors can invest in higher-value prints that may appreciate in price with time.
13. Sports Memorabilia
With the world of sports constantly evolving, the value of memorabilia changes frequently. Which memorabilia items are most valuable changes often and many modern collectibles are just as valuable as some older ones. However, there are many Boomer-era collectibles in the sports memorabilia category that are quite valuable. Getting your parents’ sports memorabilia appraised might surprise you! The items will be even more valuable if they are autographed by the players. Sports memorabilia can include jerseys, posters, trading cards, and gear. The 1932 Babe Ruth ‘Called Shot’ Jersey ended up selling for a startling $24.1 million in an auction.
12. First Edition Books
While they may seem unassuming at first, it might be a good idea to get your parents’ books appraised before you start tossing them out. Reprinted books rarely gain the same level of value that first-edition ones do, but the latter category often gains value rapidly as they age, especially if they are still in good condition. If a president was unpopular but historically significant, they may still be associated with valuable memorabilia. The most expensive political memorabilia ever sold was George Washington’s personal copy of the United States Acts of Congress, which sold at an auction for $9.8 million . The document was purchased by Mount Vernon Ladies of the Union, a museum dedicated to George Washington, and included his personal signature and annotations.
10. Vinyl Records
Vinyl records are making a comeback and remain popular among music fans in the modern day. Like with comic books, vinyl records used to be more limited in production amounts, making some older vinyls highly valuable due to their relative rarity. The exact value will depend on the quality of preservation for the record. However, many vinyls can be sold for a pretty penny if they’re playable. Some vinyls can even sell for thousands or more. The most expensive vinyl record ever sold was the Beatles’ The White Album on vinyl. The record sold for $790,000 in 2015 to a collector. The version sold was Ringo Starr’s personal double EP version with the “0000001” serial number stamped on the front. It has certainly appreciated in value since then!
9. Vintage Toys
The nostalgia factor is strong with some collectors and many people enjoy toys in their adulthood. Whether they want to relive some treasured childhood memories or display the item on a shelf, people will pay top dollar for well-preserved vintage toys. Like most collectibles, the value varies by item. Some vintage toys are worth a good amount while you couldn’t pay people to take others off your hands. However, it doesn’t hurt to have a vintage collector appraise your parents’ toy collection. Those items might have been saved to “pass down” to your children, but your children might appreciate the college fund they might get from the sale more in the future! However, even non-star-studded vintage Barbie dolls have sold for over $20,000 at various auctions.
8. Designer Clothes and Accessories
Designer clothes and accessories are already worth an exceptionally high price compared to fast fashion options. However, if a designer item is kept in good condition, it usually appreciates in value. Fashion designers rarely continue producing specific items forever. Eventually, a dress, shirt, or necklace will reach the end of its production lifespan and fall into obscurity. Once a designer fashion item exits the production line, it becomes progressively rarer. People who own and wear the item can only wear and launder it so many times before it starts to lose value. However, if it doesn’t get worn often, it may have retained value or appreciated. 7. Vintage Electronics
This category is somewhat of an extension of the previous “nerdy” interest ones. There is a huge market for certain vintage electronics among collectors. The price will depend on the item and not all old electronics are worth money. Old video game systems, some old computers, and certain older audio devices fetch the best prices. For instance, depending on the quality of preservation, a Nintendo GameBoy system can be sold for anywhere between $50 for a gently used model, and $3,000 for one that’s still unopened in a preserved box .
6. Military Memorabilia
When we say “military memorabilia” we mean real regalia, not “military-grade” civilian items. Museums and private collectors of military regalia will pay top dollar for old military medals, uniforms, and other memorabilia. The price is significantly higher for items that come from historically significant time periods, such as World War II memorabilia.
If you had a parent in the military, you might want to see if their regalia is worth something. If you aren’t interested in keeping it yourself, you might be able to get a good price for it by selling it to a museum or a collector. While it might seem like a no-brainer that jewelry can be worth a lot of money, many people don’t know how much money is stored in mom’s jewelry box or dad’s watch collection. Boomer-era fine jewelry and art can be quite collectible, especially if it comes from a high-profile jeweler. It’s probably more sentimental to keep antique jewelry in the family. However, if that isn’t in your plans, look into having it appraised. Antique jewelry sells for thousands , depending on how old it is.
2. Coins and Stamps
Among the most valuable collectibles in the world, we have coins and stamps. Unlike made-for-collecting shelf collectibles that didn’t retain their value, coins and stamps typically appreciate in value the longer one keeps them around. Of course, like other collectibles, they have to be kept in good condition. However, the good news is that anyone with a coin or stamp collection is almost assuredly a seasoned collector who takes care of their collectibles.
