You don’t have to be in Los Angeles, Hollywood, or even Beverly Hills to experience the life of a movie star. Head south to San Diego and you can immerse yourself in all the luxurious things that A-listers come to covet.

San Diego, the second-largest city in California, is not only a backdrop for many of the films and TV shows you know and love, but it also has world-class resorts and attractions — and a little thing called Comic Con that takes over the city once a year.

Those thousands of people flooding into town every summer need a place to stay, as do the millions of people who visit San Diego all year. We’ve rounded up the best of the best hotels, the ones where getting a massage to start your morning is normal and closing out the evening with a walk on the beach is a given.

If you like to live a life of luxury, or maybe want to splurge for once, here are a few San Diego hotels that fit the bill. (Ramp up your California knowledge by reading about 20 things the state is known for .)

    Hotel del Coronado

Hotel del Coronado is a stunning 1888 Victorian beachside property just 5 miles from downtown San Diego. This vast, historic resort offers modern and private beachside cabanas or vacation rentals with one to three bedrooms. Rates range from $300 to $1,768.

Hotel del Coronado sits on the beach with beautiful Pacific views, but there is a lot more to do here. You can spend some time lounging at the pool, which offers private cabanas, or relax in the spa with a massage or facial. There are also several shops on the grounds, selling everything from quality luggage to sweet treats.

Foodies will especially love this hotel as it has several dining options — and you can even enjoy a meal on the beach!

Amenities for all guests include a concierge, child care, laundry service, a business center, a fitness center, and more. It’s also pet-friendly.

    Fairmont Grand Del Mar

The gorgeous, Mediterranean-style Fairmont Grand Del Mar sits on 400 acres in Carmel Valley and 5 miles from the beach. It offers 249 rooms, suites, and villas with some amazing amenities. Rates start at just over $300 a night.

At this family- and pet-friendly resort, you can enjoy a round of golf on a Tom Fazio-designed course, or pamper yourself at the spa. There’s also tennis and pickleball, indoor and outdoor fitness centers, yoga and fitness classes, and an Explorers’ Club for the kids. You can also go horseback riding, hiking, or spend your afternoons lazing by the pool.

Dining options include Addison, a Michelin-starred restaurant that will certainly elevate your unforgettable stay. There are three other eateries on site, as well as a lounge.

Guest rooms have marble bathrooms featuring deep soaking tubs and balconies or terraces.

Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa is about as luxurious as you can get in sunny San Diego. This 45-acre resort offers a variety of accommodations, from king rooms to villas to private residences. Rates start at $639 a night.

Michelin said this resort might be Southern California’s best-kept secret . Its recent accolades include a 5-star award from Forbes and the AAA Five Diamond Award.

Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa calls its suites “casitas,” and each comes with rustic custom furnishings and a private garden patio that overlooks olive groves and the surrounding canyons. Amenities include 24-hour in-room dining, orange juice delivered every morning, complimentary daily activities, fitness classes, a concierge, child care, and more.

Tennis is really front and center here, with 16 courts to choose from and tennis pros available for instruction. There are also pickleball courts, Electra pedal-assist bicycles, and of course, the Spa, which features lounges, a retail area, and a salon. You can even rent a Bentley!

    The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Sunset Magazine rated The Lodge as the No. 1 hotel in the West, and its rustic and inviting atmosphere make it easy to see why. The charming rooms feature Egyptian cotton linens, a Nespresso coffee maker, and 24-hour room service. Some rooms have a fireplace and private patio.

This pet-friendly hotel also offers a spa, complimentary shoe shine, luxury car service, and complimentary putters in case you left yours at home.

Dining options include A.R. Valentien for fine dining, and The Grill for a more laid-back meal.

One amenity that shouldn’t be missed is the Rooftop Cinema Club. Watch a movie under the stars with skyline views, wireless headphones, cocktails, and concessions.

In-room amenities include a 65-inch flat-screen HDTV and blackout drapes. Hotel amenities offered are several pools (including two rooftop pools), a fitness center, sports courts, and more.

While not directly connected to the hotel but just steps away, Seaport Village is a must with its many shops and dining options. The Manchester Grand Hyatt has seven on-site options for dining and drinks. (Check out the 20 must-see destinations in California right now .)
