National media gave the Broncos no chance to win but with Danielson's message of just giving your best, the Broncos gave the Ducks almost too much to handle.(Little bit of housekeeping before we continue. I realized that most people reading this watched the game, so my recaps of the game did not seem to add much. I'll be focusing more on evaluations of the game from now on.)Top 5 Takeaways from Week 21. Offensive Line as a whole is an elite unit. Losing Randolph for the distant future and the unknown status of Carreon is tough to take, but the amount of holes they opened for Jeanty and protection they gave Maddux was impressive. 2. Defense improved. It wasn't where we want it to be still, but they improved. 3. Dirk Koetter's play calling was interesting. Not trying to say I know better than Dirk, but with the RB room that we have, the play calls I saw were very questionable at times. 4. <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/maddux-madsen-46109214/">Maddux Madsen</a> again had an average day. Average doesn't get us into the CFP. I'll just leave it at that for now5. Hot take: <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/ashton-jeanty-46098064/">Ashton Jeanty</a> will be a Heisman finalist. Evaluation of Bronco performanceOffenseGood:<ul><li>This offensive running attack is just too insane to watch. The Broncos were able to gash the Ducks for 221 yards off of 33 attempts, with Jeanty leading the way in that category, finishing the game with a 25 carries, 192 yards rushing and 3 TD's. This Offense should continue to be a run first offense, both because I want Jeanty to be a Heisman finalist and it is the strength of our team</li><li>The Offensive Line played their tails off again. O-line only allowed 1 sack, which was more on Maddux stepping up way too high in the pocket and opened up holes that semi-trucks could run through. Even without 2 starters, this unit played solid. </li><li>Receivers after the catch. There was a lot of athleticism shown by our receivers ATC, which is super great to see as a fan. Once we get the ball in these guy's hands, everyone should be on the lookout for some big plays. </li></ul>Bad:<ul><li>The passing attack during this game left a lot top be desired. Madsen ended the day with a 17/40, 148 yds and 1 TD stat line. His QBR was a whooping 57.4. I'm not here to start a debate on QB situations or what the coaching staff should do during the BYE week, but I am here to say that this team needs more production out of the QB position. This can be picked apart by saying OU's secondary was better, the pass rush on Maddux was better and I'm sure plenty of other reasons. That is not being disputed. But if this team's goals of being a CFP team are to be realized, Maddux or someone else needs to step up their QB play. </li><li>Sire Gaines was not used as much during this game, which was surprising and leads to my take on DK's play calling being suspect. With the type of work horses we have in that backfield, one would think we would pound the ball more often. Especially during that goal line stand before halftime. For a run first offense, it didn't seem like we were running the ball very much.</li></ul>Grade: C+DefenseGood:<ul><li>Coming into this season, many were worried about how the pass rush would look, especially with our only known rusher being Ahmed Hassanein. After this Week2 game, I think those worries have subsided. Boise State posted 4 sacks yesterday and currently have 8 on the season. Erik Chinander seems to be using some of the secondary on blitz packages and if it keeps leading to Defensive stats like this, I am all on board with it. </li><li>Run defense also looks extremely solid. There was some runs that went for longer than they should have, due to tackling problems, but Boise State was able to hold Oregon to a measly 110 rushing yards. Oregon RB Jordan James barely broke 100 yards rushing and had a long run of just 12 yards. Both sides of the ball have been playing lights out so far, and if we can hold a NIL powered rush attack to barely over 100 yards, the MW rushing attacks are in trouble. </li><li>Lets all take a breath before this last point.....the secondary played better than it did last week. Not to say there isn't still serious problems with the explosive plays, but it did not seem like the Secondary was getting picked apart as much as it was a week ago. Baby steps with this unit apparently.</li></ul>Bad:<ul><li>While the secondary played better, I truly do not understand how for the second season in a row, we have a continued problem of DEEP passing plays hurting us. It truly baffles me that no matter who we bring in from the portal or what new coach we bring on staff, we can not defend the deep ball. The Defense was bailed out by some bad throws towards the end of the game, but it seemed that any pass that was going for 15+ yards, it was being completed. I'm not sure the Legion of Boom could save this secondary right now. This, alongside the ST unit should be the top priority for this staff. </li></ul>Grade: B-Special TeamsGood:<ul><li>Nothing.</li></ul>Bad:<ul><li>Missed FG's, line drive punts, kickoffs not going out the back of the endzone. Just all terrible. Stacy Collins has some work to do because this is not the type of ST unit we brought him back to lead. </li></ul>Grade: FOverallGood:<ul><li>During the Avalos era, there was always this feeling that something bad was going to happen during any given moment. An ever existing sense of dread that any good play could be wiped out by a penalty, or that anything that isn't too bad, would somehow turn into a game changing moment. I do not feel that with this team. Spencer Danielson has breathed new life and new optimism into this program. The players seemed motivated throughout the entire game. Anything negative was answered back with something positive. Any bumps were dealt with and we never gave up in the fight. This seemed like a Boise State team of old. SD has things on thr right track right now, and this team should be rolling when conference play comes.</li></ul>Bad:<ul><li>With a new head of a program comes growing pains and questionable decisions. Should we have gone for a TD instead of settling for a FG before half? Should we have a new QB1? Why was the ST unit so bad, with such a good coach? These are all questions that can neither be answered now or we will probably never get an answer to. While I do love the energy of this team, it is still very new into the Danielson era and errors like this are going to happen. With experience and games under his belt, mental mistakes, like what cost us the game yesterday, won't happen with as much frequency. But that's the hard part, Bronco Nation has to roll with Danielson, good and bad, as he grows with his experience. It's a sucky reality to face, but it is something that we as a fanbase have to agree to, because SD seems like the man for the job. </li></ul>Grade: BLooking aheadNext week, Boise State has a BYE Week (Boo), which gives the team a time to rest up and focus on things that need to be fixed (Yay!). Since Boise State won't be playing, here are some interesting matchups that Bronco fans should be on the lookout for: <ul><li>(Thursday) Arizona State vs. Texas State- G5 CFP implications here. Texas State just smacked UTSA and looks like a dominate team.</li><li>(Friday) Kansas vs. UNLV- G5 CFP implications here too, but also to see how well the Rebels will play against their first quality opponent.</li><li>(Saturday) Florida State vs. Memphis- One of our biggest rivals for the GF CFP spot against a floundering Seminole team. What could go wrong? </li><li>Oregon vs. Oregon State- Lets see how good the Ducks and Beavs truly are. Good litmus test for both teams. </li><li>Tulane v. Oklahoma- An L from Tulane here would all but kill their CFP hopes. </li><li>Washington vs. Washington State- Good game to watch to see how Wazzu looks. </li></ul></div></body>
