Tank Dell on shooting: 'Wrong place, wrong time, blessed to get out of it healthy'

Just over a month since Texans wide receiver Tank Dell suffered a gunshot wound to the leg at a party near his hometown in Florida, he's thankful to get out of it healthy.

Dell is practicing with his teammates and coaches without limitations, despite catching a stray bullet after a fight broke out at the party in late-April.

Once it was clear that his life was not in danger, it became worrisome about what this would mean for his football season. Dell was already returning from a broken leg suffered during the season against the Denver Broncos, then add this as more he'd need to overcome.

"Yeah, I don't want to keep reliving the experience. It definitely changed my perspective of things," Dell said. "Being around the right group of guys and being in the right situations. But just wrong place, wrong time. So, just got to live with it. I'm blessed. God blessed me to get out of that situation healthy. I was only down for like a week, but I was just working out. But after that, I got right back to work, and I'm feeling good."

It's a relief that he's feeling well. The Texans are expecting a lot from their wide receiver group, including Dell. They traded for Stefon Diggs, twice an All-Pro, and signed Nico Collins to a three-year extension.

Quarterback C.J. Stroud and Dell have been attached at the hip this offseason, though the quarterback was not with the receiver in Florida during the shooting. Stroud, as you might imagine, is glad to have his friend around and healthy.

“It was amazing," Stroud said when asked how it's been having Dell back on the field. "It’s just a testament to him and one, the God we serve. And then two, just the work that he's put in. He came back before it was even scheduled he could get cleared, and then on top of that, just coming back after that freak accident. I think we serve a God that's merciful and that’s purposeful, and he knows that and he stepped into it. And me and him, we have those conversations about our faith. And – because this football stuff, it seems like it's everything, but it's not. We're people and we go through a lot off the field people don't know.

"You know, as his brother, I have to be there for him just like he is there for me when I go through what I go through. I'm just proud of him, man. The word ‘proud’ probably isn't even enough to state the feelings that I have for that guy. He's one of my best friends that I've gotten to know over the years in this world of football. Past that, I feel like I’ve known Tank since I've been three years old. I think our connection is kind of we grew up together. Just got a lot of love for that guy. I'm very excited for him. He's been snapping at practice and doing really well, and to knock off the rust that quick shows how much work he's put in."
