Matt Eberflus after an 0-for-2 night: Bears have a 'great process' in place for initiating challenges

(670 The Score) Bears head coach Matt Eberflus stood by the process that led to two unsuccessful challenges in the team’s 19-13 loss to the Texans on Sunday night at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Bears failed on a coach's challenge in the first half and in the second half, costing them a timeout each time. The second missed challenge left Chicago without a timeout that would've been important as it tried to make a late rally in the closing minutes.

In the second quarter, the Bears challenged a catch by Texans star receiver Stefon Diggs, believing he didn't complete a catch along their sideline. That play was upheld after the official review. The second unsuccessful challenge came late in the third quarter after nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon reached for a potential interception. The ruling on the field said the football hit the turf, and that call was upheld by review.

In reflecting on the situations, Eberflus stood by his coaching staff and the process that goes into deciding each challenge, though he indicated the Bears didn't get an immediate view on their monitors in the booth.

“We have a good process for that," Eberflus told reporters in Houston. "So, it's a little bit different when you can't see the monitor right away, and it's a critical play like a third down or a takeaway. But we have a great process.

"We’ve been pretty clean overall since we’ve been here. Those were just situations where we didn’t get a great look at it and they were critical downs. We made a decision to do it, and it didn’t work that way.”

Eberflus has challenged just seven plays over parts of three seasons in Chicago, with only two plays overturned by video replay.

The Bears (1-1) travel to Indianapolis to play the Colts (0-2) next Sunday.
