Police: Driver making illegal turn on Kelly Drive causes 3-car crash in Philadelphia; 1 dead

One person is dead after a driver made an illegal turn on Kelly Drive and caused a three-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia , according to police.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. as a Nissan Altima driver made an illegal turn on Kelly Drive and crossed the northbound lanes onto Reservoir Drive.

The maneuver clipped a white Nissan Rogue, which then caused a black BMW to spin out.

Police say a 41-year-old man in the Nissan Altima was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

At least five others were injured, including the 45-year-old driver of the Altima, who sources say was working for a rideshare service at the time of the crash.

The 45-year-old is listed as stable, police said.

The crash closed Kelly Drive between Hunting Park Avenue and Fountain Green Drive for hours.

"I feel like when there's traffic on this road, it's really not that bad. But it's more when there are not many cars on the road, that's when people start to get a little more heavy on the gas," said Dane Mandato, of East Falls.

We spoke to several folks who were jogging or biking in the area of the crash. Every single one of them said it's not uncommon for them to see drivers make risky moves along this stretch of road.

Kevin McLaughlin, who's out here often, says the city should consider additional safety measures like more signage to make sure drivers are always aware and alert.

"A little more barriers to force people to stay in their lanes. Some measures like that would probably be good," he said.

The victim who was killed has not been identified.

No charges have been filed at this time.
