A former Philadelphia labor leader who wielded significant clout in Pennsylvania politics was sentenced on Thursday to six years in prison for bribing a City Council member and stealing nearly $600,000 from the union he ran for nearly three decades.John Dougherty, 64, was convicted in December of embezzlement, conspiracy and dozens of other counts in a 2019 indictment, which accused him of using the politically powerful electricians' union as his "personal bank account" and a source of jobs for family and friends. Video shows person falling from window while escaping boarding house fire in Atlantic City
A total of nine people were injured and dozens of people are out of their homes after a five-alarm fire erupted in a boarding house in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Thursday.Those injured include four firefighters and five civilians.Two of the injured civilians had to be flown to a burn center. There was no immediate word on their conditions.The firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries.Both the boarding house and a home next door were destroyed. New study raises questions about tampon safety for women
A new study that detected variable levels of heavy metals, including lead, in tampons currently on the market is being reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a spokesperson for the agency told ABC News.The study published in Environmental International by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, evaluated the levels of 16 types of metals, including lead as well as mercury, arsenic and iron, in 30 tampons from 14 different brands obtained in the U.S., Greece and England.Differing levels of metals were found on materials of all 30 tampons, which included both organic and non-organic brands, according to...

Cape May County Zoo receives $1.4M gift -- it's the largest single donation ever
The Cape May County Zoo announced Wednesday night that it has received its largest single donation ever.Charles Muller, a long-time supporter, donated $1,435,787.Muller, of North Jersey, died in 2022 and left his entire estate to the zoo.He and his wife, Elizabeth, first visited the zoo in the early 2000s.One of their favorite animals was Rocky, the Siberian tiger, who sadly passed away in June 2017.Through the years, Muller formed a close relationship with Michael Laffey, the former director of parks.Laffey was later named the executor of Muller's will, which requested the money be used to benefit the zoo by providing food, shelter, including habitats and exhibits, and medical care for the animals."We are extremely fortunate to have friends of the Zoo from around the country and from all walks of life who love our Zoo as much as we do," said Cape May County Commissioner Director Leonard Desiderio.

Good Samaritans help runaway pig on I-76 in King of Prussia
Several good Samaritans helped rescue a runaway pig that got loose on the highway in King of Prussia on Wednesday.It happened at approximately 3 p.m. on Interstate 76.Officers responded to reports of a runaway pig on the roadway.Dorothy, a 1-year-old pig, had hopped over a trailer door and broke out onto the Schuylkill Expressway, authorities say.Allyson Stephens is fostering Dorothy and was reportedly taking her to the vet to be spayed.Stephens shared photos with Action News after the rescue.Dorothy ran a little less than a mile down the expressway when good Samaritans stopped to help wrangle her.They then gave her water and helped authorities at the scene.According to police, Dorothy was previously involved in a severe neglect case out of New Jersey.After she gets spayed, police say Dorothy is on her way to her forever home.
Tolls set to increase on 4 major bridges in Philadelphia area
Get ready to pay higher tolls if you travel over any Delaware River Port Authority bridges.The DRPA's Finance Committee advanced a new toll schedule Wednesday morning.The plan increases passenger vehicle tolls from $5 to $6 for those traveling on the Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross bridges.The Board of Commissioners will vote next Wednesday, July 17.The earliest it would take effect is August 1.Officials say the increase is necessary to keep up with aging infrastructure and security.This would be the first toll hike in 13 years.

A woman in Bucks County who worked as a caregiver to the elderly and faked having cancer to delay her theft trial was sentenced in court on Wednesday.Shannon Lynn Eberhart, 48, of Bensalem, was sentenced for stealing thousands of dollars in cash and heirloom jewelry from the families of two elderly women she cared for.She then submitted fake medical documents claiming to have stage 4 esophageal cancer to delay her trial.Eberhart was initially charged in February 2023 following an investigation by Newtown Township police.The investigation revealed that Eberhart had stolen cash and jewelry from two women who she worked for...
