A New Jersey father is facing charges after his infant daughter died as a result of being left in a hot car this week, according to prosecutors.Lakewood Township police responded to the area of New Egypt Roadaround 1:45 p.m. Monday for a report of an 8-week-old girl in cardiac arrest.According to court documents, the infant had been in the car since around 9:20 a.m.The infant died at the scene despite life-saving efforts, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.A further investigation determined the cause and manner of death was due to the infant being left unattended in her father's car...

How Philadelphia first responders are taking extra precautions in extreme heat
With temperatures hovering near 100 degrees in many places, first responders are taking extra precautions to stay safe in the heat."We are trying to get through this heat," said Derek Bowmer, the assistant deputy fire commissioner for Philadelphia. "We're going to get through it because we will still respond."Firefighters have to wear 40 pounds worth of gear when they respond, and they know the dangers of overheating.On July 8, several buildings caught fire in Allentown, and six firefighters were taken to the hospital for heat-related injuries.With extreme temperatures, extra crews are called to emergency scenes to help the firefighters cool off, and the crews will be cycled out periodically."We bring in more resources when a fire happens," said Bowmer. Ex-officer guilty of perjury, obstruction for role in wrongful murder conviction case
A jury convicted a former Philadelphia homicide detective for assaulting a suspect to obtain a confession and then lying about it in court.James Pitts was found guilty of obstruction and perjury on Tuesday.Pitts was accused of assaulting Obina Onyiah in 2010, which resulted in Onyiah confessing to a robbery and murder of William Glatz at a jewelry store, which he did not commit.Onyiah's conviction was vacated in 2021 after evidence showed he could not have committed the crime.Pitts is scheduled to be sentenced on October 4.According to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, this is the first time in the city's history that a Philadelphia detective has been found guilty of coercing a confession that led to the wrongful conviction of an innocent person."My administration will continue to seek evenhanded justice in all cases prosecuted by this office, regardless of the defendant, because no one is above the law," said DA Larry Krasner.

Man convicted of killing Temple University student Samuel Collington sentenced to decades in prison
The man convicted of killing a Temple University student during a robbery back in 2021 will spend decades behind bars.Latif Williams, 19, was convicted of third-degree murder back in February in the death of 21-year-old Samuel Collington of Prospect Park, Pa.He was sentenced on Tuesday to 25 - 50 years in prison.Police say Collington was shot and killed while returning to the North Philadelphia campus after spending Thanksgiving break with his family.He was set to graduate the following spring.Authorities said he was unloading his SUV near the 2200 block of N. Park Avenue when Williams snuck up on him and a struggle ensued.Collington was shot in the chest and back. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died of his injuries.

NJ fishermen save NYC swimmer found 2 miles from shore after treading water for hours
A man was rescued by fishermen after being pulled out to sea by the tide at New York City beach. He was then found by the men almost two miles away from the shoreline in New Jersey.Police said a 34-year-old man went into the water at Breezy Point in Queens when he was swept out by the tide.The man said he was treading water for several hours until he was found by the fishermen.Police received a call at 9 a.m. that a commercial fisherman spotted a swimmer in distress about two miles away from the shoreline of Sandy Hook.The fisherman and his son brought the man onto their boat and transported him back to Monmouth Cove Marina in Port Monmouth.Officers met the swimmer at the marina where he was seen by medical personnel and was found to be in good condition.Officers provided the swimmer, who identified himself as Pete Ordane of New York City, with dry clothes and food before arranging transportation from the area.The Middletown Police commended the fisherman and his son, who live in Port Monmouth and wish to remain anonymous, for saving Ordane's life.
