New music series coming to Garfield Park in Indianapolis

If you missed summer concerts at Garfield Park this summer, don’t fret. Live music is coming back to the park this fall.

Indianapolis-based arts nonprofits Big Car Collaborative + Arte Mexicano en Indiana are bringing Levitt VIBE, a seven-week live music series, to Garfield Park on Sunday afternoons in September and October.

The concerts will be family friendly and free to attend in the grassy area outside the Garfield Park Art Center and Pagoda at 2432 Conservatory Dr. with food trucks each week.

The events will be from 12 to 3 p.m. on the following dates:

• Sept. 1, 8, 22, and 29 + Oct. 6, 13, and 20

“The idea is to bring additional liveliness to an underused area of our park with free outdoor music experiences and neighborly, inclusive, fun, and creative social gatherings,” said Big Car executive director and co-founder Jim Walker, a longtime Garfield Park resident. “Our organization, which is based here, has been working [...] with neighbors in the park for more than a decade. We’re excited to continue sharing the gifts of music, art, and fun in this way.”

The performances will feature a wide range of genres, plus there will be activities like haiku writing stations, Garfield Park postcard coloring, interactive art-making, select local vendors, and open picnicking. Attendees are welcome to bring their own food, drinks, and lawn chairs or blankets.

This live music series is being made possible thanks to the Los Angeles-based Levitt Foundation, and the neighborhood was selected as one of three neighborhoods as part of its pilot program supporting free concerts and advancing equitable music ecosystems.
