North Las Vegas returns to top spot on unemployment in Nevada cities

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — North Las Vegas vaulted back to the top as the city with the highest unemployment rate in Nevada, according to a report released Tuesday by the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

North Las Vegas came in at 7.4%, passing Fernley for the state’s worst unemployment problem, DETR’s report showed. Just a month ago, North Las Vegas unemployment was at 6.6%, just behind Fernley’s 6.7%.

Las Vegas was next on the list at 6.3%, followed by Henderson (5.9%), Boulder City (5.8%) and Mesquite (5.5%).

DETR reported last week that the statewide unemployment rate had increased from 5.1% to 5.2% . California passed Nevada as the state with the worst jobless rate earlier this year, but Nevada is right behind California and Washington, D.C., in Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reporting.

The state’s three largest metro areas — Las Vegas, Reno and Carson City — all saw increases in unemployment.

The Las Vegas metro area’s unemployment rate was 6.2% in June, increasing from 5.6% in May, and up from 5.4% in June 2023, non-seasonally adjusted. The number of unemployed individuals increased by 7,699 over the previous month. In June, there were 74,623 people who were unemployed, which is 10,273 more unemployed people than June 2023.

The labor force in Las Vegas is currently 1,201,846 people — 912 fewer people than in May, and up by 20,338 people since June 2023.
