As Sphere looks to crank up the volume, Las Vegas residents weigh in

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — It is already the brightest object on the Las Vegas Strip, but it might soon become the loudest with Sphere looking to turn up the volume.

People come from all over to catch the sights and sounds of Sphere, but for people like Caleb Bears, he would not want to live next to it especially if they turn it up.

“I think it definitely is going to be a nuisance for those around here,” Bears said. “There is not too much residential area around, but it is definitely going to be an irritant to anyone who isn’t going there.”

For those nearby like Jacob Brady, he said they do not hear a lot of the current sound coming out Sphere’s speakers that surround the exterior of the building.

“You really can’t hear a whole lot over there and we’re actually in the building which is the closest, I don’t see it being too bad,” Brady explained.

Sphere is looking to increase audio levels for special occasions which have yet to be determined and they told 8 News Now that they want to be a good neighbor. They are asking for an increase to 87 decibels with a limit of 18 days a year and a hard stop at midnight.

But for residents in Clark County, you can be penalized if your music is heard from 75 feet away.

One 8 News Now viewer weighed in with her feelings in a Facebook comment.

“It’s unfair to people who live around there,” she wrote.

She is not alone, with some thinking that adding more sound will bring more people around.

It is still one of the biggest draws to that part of the Strip and has many flocking to see it.

“With this sound it is okay,” Montui Mendigoria, a Las Vegas tourist with Sphere on his must-see list, said. “Seeing it outside is enough already for me.”

The Paradise Town Advisory Board met Tuesday to discuss the issue and after much debate, it was approved.

Now, it heads to the Clark County Commission for a vote on Sept. 4.
