Illness at Las Vegas valley charter school being investigated

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Multiple students at Doral Academy of Nevada have fallen ill, prompting a health concern.

A small number of students complained of a gastrointestinal issue at Doral Academy – Pebble Campus last week, according to a letter the school’s principal posted on Facebook Wednesday. The school is located near Pebble and Torrey Pines.

“We had classrooms deep cleaned and sanitized over the weekend,” Principal Julianna Turley of Doral Academy said. “We ask children to stay home until they are fever-free with no vomiting for 24 hours.”

Since the deep cleaning, Turley said only two new cases have been reported.

In a statement to 8 News Now, the Southern Nevada Health District stated: “We are investigating reports of illness but have not confirmed an outbreak or cause at this time.”

The principal’s letter reads in full:

Good afternoon families!

Towards the end of last week our Health Office saw several students complaining of gastrointestinal illnesses. The number of students reporting was at or less than 2% of our student and staff population. Although the overall number of students reported to the Health Office was relatively small, we contacted the Southern NV Health District just to be on the safe side. We had classrooms deep cleaned and sanitized over the weekend, which has helped the spread of further issues. As of yesterday, August 20, we have only had 2 additional issues reported. Just as a reminder we ask children to stay home until they are fever free with no vomiting for 24 hours.
