City councilwoman searching for solutions as residents of Henderson neighborhood may be forced to move out

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Residents in a Henderson neighborhood were in shock when they found a letter from the City of Henderson posted on their door, telling them if their HOA didn’t fix a long-standing water leak, they’d have their water shut off and have to move out.

Leaky pipes, water in roads and closed-off parking lots. They’re all the result of a broken water main under the Somerset Park neighborhood.

A resident of the neighborhood, Lawrence Bermoy, told 8 News Now he remembers the leakage being a problem from the day he moved in, which was three years ago.

“They fixed the on in front of my house, and then it came back. Then they fixed it again. And then I’d see them fixing other ones, and the pipes would still break,” Bermoy said.

The crux of the situation goes back to the HOA, which residents pay nearly $300 a month for in fees.

Residents told 8 News Now the previous HOA management company shut down and never budgeted for repairing the water main.

Now, it’s the new management’s mess to clean up. Henderson City Councilwoman Carrie Cox is working closely with the management company and is exploring options for acquiring a loan for immediate repairs.

“I think we should probably know something soon, as this is a developing situation that needs immediate action, and that’s what I’m definitely working on,” Cox said.

For residents like Rick Martinez, immediate action is needed. Martinez recently closed on a home at Somerset Park, living the American dream as a first-time homeowner. An American dream he doesn’t want to turn into a nightmare.

“I’m going to have to be paying a mortgage for a house I can’t live in, as well as paying for rent, wherever I find a place to live at,” Martinez said.

Councilwoman Cox will be discussing the situation with residents at a regularly scheduled infrastructure discussion on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center at 1575 Galleria Dr.
