LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — An overwhelming 71.4% of Nevada voters polled recently favor eliminating taxes on tips.

The idea has gained widespread support among Nevadans — and other states, too — since former President Donald Trump put it out there at a June rally at Sunset Park during a Las Vegas campaign rally. The Culinary Union immediately labeled it a political stunt, but it has grown beyond that now. The union and Democrats have supported all or part of the idea.

The poll asked: “Tips received by employees are considered federally taxable income. Do you think taxes on tips should be eliminated, or should tips remain taxable?” Here’s how Nevadans responded:

71.4% — Taxes on tips should be eliminated
16.5% — Tips should remain taxable
12.0% — Unsure or no opinion

The question was included in the latest Emerson College Polling/The Hill/8 News Now poll, which was conducted Aug. 26-28. The poll surveyed 1,168 Nevadans who said they are “very likely” to vote in the November election. The poll has a credibility interval — similar to a margin of error — of 2.8% in Nevada.

SEPARATE STORIES: The poll also asked voters about the battle between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump , along with the races for U.S. Senate and Congress .

Seven swing states were surveyed in the poll, providing a further look at the issue’s popularity in other parts of the country.

    • In Arizona , 73.9% of voters said taxes on tips should be eliminated, 14.2% said they should remain taxable and 11.9% were unsure or had no opinion.
    • In Georgia : 73.5% said eliminate them, 11.6% said they should remain taxable and 14.9% were unsure.
    • In Michigan : 64.9% said eliminate the tax, 17.0% said keep it and 18.2% were unsure.
    • North Carolina : 70.2% said eliminate it, 17.7% said keep it and 12.1% were unsure
    • Pennsylvania : 68.4% eliminate, 16.5% keep it and 15.0% unsure
    • Wisconsin : 65.6% said eliminate the tax, 19.5% said keep it and 15.0% were unsure.

In Nevada’s poll, Democrats were less likely to support killing the tax and independents favored it more than Republicans or Democrats. Trump supporters favored the idea more than Harris supporters. Several people who participated in the poll said they had never heard of at least one of the candidates, but they favored eliminating the tax on tips.
