Las Vegas driver accused in fatal DUI hit-and-run was out of custody on 3rd DUI arrest

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man accused of driving impaired and colliding with a motorcycle passenger, killing her, was out of custody on his third DUI arrest in recent years, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned.

Officers arrested Corey Carr, 41, on charges of DUI resulting in death and duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death, records said.

On Thursday, Aug. 22 around 11:15 p.m., Carr allegedly drove impaired on Flamingo Road near Decatur Boulevard and collided with a Breanna Trace, who was a passenger on a motorcycle, documents said. Officers believe the motorcyclist and Trace stood up in the road before Carr fatally hit Trace and left the area.

According to documents, another driver followed Carr to a nearby apartment complex and watched Carr run from the car without shoes on.

Officers located Carr and asked him about the crash, documents said. While speaking with officers, Carr admitted to buying alcohol at a Chinatown liquor store before driving, documents said.

At the time of his arrest, Carr was out of custody on his third DUI since 2020, documents said. Carr was convicted of two DUIs in December 2020 and arrested again earlier this year, records said.

On May 17, officers stopped Carr near the same intersection after they said he was driving 60 mph on Flamingo Road in a 35-mph zone. While speaking with Carr, officers suspected he was impaired.

During his initial appearance in court later that same day, a judge could not legally hold Carr nor set bail because a criminal complaint was not filed. The practice is standard in DUI cases as prosecutors await a defendant’s blood results. Records show prosecutors filed their criminal complaint for Carr’s May 17 DUI arrest on Aug. 22, the same day as his fourth DUI arrest.

In Carr’s most recent case, Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Daniel Westmeyer denied setting bail.

A preliminary hearing in Carr’s most recent DUI case was scheduled for Sept. 10.
