LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Clark County School District police are cracking down on reckless drivers in school zones, and it’s led to more than 1,200 traffic citations since students returned to class.

Lt. Bryan Zink with CCSDPD said it’s up to patrol and traffic officers to enforce the rules.

“We’re just wanting the public to be good citizens. Be good drivers, and just do simple stuff to make sure our kids get to school safely,” Lt. Zink said.

According to CCSDPD, the 1,200 traffic citations officers issued in school zones came in the first 10 days of the 2024-2025 school year. Eight students were also struck by vehicles.

On Thursday morning at Lied Middle School, located near Tropical and Bradley, an 8 News Now reporter saw CCSD police citing drivers.

“Everybody should know in the state of Nevada that it is illegal to do U-turns in active school zones,” Zink said. “But still that probably accounts for a large amount of the tickets that we do write every year.”

In less than three weeks, traffic officers have confiscated guns and arrested drivers suspected of being drunk.

A photo CCSDPD shared on its Facebook page shows a driver blew a blood alcohol level of .343, which was more than four times over the legal limit.

“To have something like that in an active school zone during dismissal, it was pretty egregious,” Zink said.

Due to the record-high number of students that were hit by cars last school year, several local municipalities added crossing guards at middle schools.

Officials believe mix of e-bikes, reckless drivers likely led to high number of kids hit by cars

138 students were hit by cars during the 2023-2024 school year, which was double the previous year.

Zink said a school zone is active half an hour before classes start and half an hour after. The same timeframe applies when students are dismissed.
