LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 19-year-old is dead after he waded into deep water and fell off an underwater shelf in the Nelson’s Landing area of Lake Mohave. Park rangers said the teen was not wearing a life vest which is required on that lake.

A good samaritan was able to retrieve the unresponsive teen from the water and CPR was administered but he was unable to be resuscitated, rangers said.

Nelson’s Landing is a popular spot for teens to gather and sometimes cliff dive. While there is no indication the teen was taking part in cliff jumping, park rangers want to emphasize cliff jumping is dangerous and prohibited.

Lake Mead National Park rangers said there are life jacket loaner stations throughout the park for people to borrow a life jacket.

Also this weekend, San Bernardino County (California) Sheriff’s deputies responded to a spot on the Colorado River known as “Devil’s Elbow.” A 35-year-old man lost consciousness after jumping off a 50-foot cliff.

Bystanders pulled him from the water and performed CPR before authorities arrived. The man was transported by helicopter to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, according to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department. He is expected to make a full recovery.
