Clark County Commission to discuss Sphere audio launch

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Sphere is known for its eye-catching exterior, but now with a possible audio launch to the Exosphere, outdoor music could be its newest attraction, but not everyone is on board.

“There’s no need to increase the noise; If anything, they need to decrease it,” nearby resident, Nate Rowling shared with 8 News Now.

Rowling lives in an apartment complex just a block away from Sphere and said lately the sounds coming from the entertainment venue have been a major nuisance, keeping him and his neighbors up.

“At 3 a.m., when I’m in bed trying to go to sleep. It sounds like there is a club outside of my apt either a club or some crazy rainfall going on because they have this dripping noise which is unbelievably loud,” Rowling said.

Sphere asked the county for a special use permit to allow them to launch an audio system on the Exosphere to create an immersive and multi-sensory experience on the outside just like they have on the inside.

Sphere officials said they brought in its sound engineer to monitor the level with the audio-only sounding off at certain times of the year with a cut-off time at midnight.

“We’ll only be able to amplify the sound on 12 dates every year,” Richard Constable, Executive VP for Government Community Affairs with Sphere said. “There will be no overnight amplification, and we will give notice to anyone who is within a certain radius of the Sphere of the times when we will amplify the sound.”

County Commissioner Tick Segerblom shared that this will all be discussed at the county commissioner meeting on Sept. 4 however, Segerblom said from what he has seen thus far he doesn’t see this potential audio interfering with those around.

“On certain occasions, they want to go above that and maybe have a concert or something. That’s where the issue comes up, but I think we have figured out how to limit that and the number of days and the time and how long it can go,” Segerblom shared.
