LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The Las Vegas Athletic Club announced it is actively hiring and training lifeguards to meet the Southern Nevada Health District’s requirements.

Fatal pool incident leads to reversal of lifeguard policy in southern Nevada

The announcement comes nearly a month after the LVAC announced it would close its pools to comply with a Southern Nevada Health District regulation that requires lifeguards at all gym pools.

The announcement was sent out to club members on Thursday by Chad O. Smith president of the LVAC. Smith appeared in court earlier this year and took legal action against the SNHD.

The requirement for Las Vegas-area gym pools is a reversal of a 2020 waiver that had previously allowed certain locations to operate without lifeguards.

The change in safety regulations follows a health district investigation which found a woman had drowned at an LVAC pool followed by a near-drowning event earlier this year.

In a letter to its club members, the LVCVA did mention that the plan has not yet been approved by the SNHD.
